Police are investigating the death of a British married couple who were in the process of building a holiday home by the coast in Mombasa in Kenya.
Pensioners Norman and Rita Joel from Essex were killed during what appears to have been an attempted robbery. Two people had been arrested.
A post mortem is due to be held by early reports say Mr Joel was stabbed at least 17 times and his wife 11 times. The couple travelled to Kenya two weeks ago and were due to return to the UK this week.
Further reports now suggest they were murdered at the property and their bodies were then taken to another location more than 10 miles away, presumably in an attempt to hide the crime.
A source close to the couple reported that they were regular visitors to Mombasa and despite also being victims of a robbery in the area during a visit last year were still happy to set up a holiday home there.
Norman, aged 70, and Rita, aged 67, had been married for 20 years. A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: “We are in contact with the family and will be keeping them updated on information we receive from the Kenyan authorities.”
Advice given to British travellers to Kenya on the Foreign Office website says: “Muggings and armed attacks by gangs can occur at any time, particularly in Nairobi and Mombasa. Avoid walking around after dark as attacks can occur anywhere, but especially in isolated areas such as empty beaches.”

Local reports state that the collapse of A&G Property Wise Development Ltd last month has left owners who do not have a secure claim to a title deed ‘at the mercy of the banks.
No accounts for the company have been lodged since 2003, but these showed that €13.6m of A&G’s total debts were in the hands of Universal Bank, which now trades under the name of USB Bank.
A bank spokesman explained that in the case of a property offered as security has been bought by a third party, any claim will depend on whether that person has lodged documents with the Land Registry therefore establishing some claim to Title.
